Williamsburg, KY – Fifth-seed Point Park University jumped out to a 7-1 lead and fended off a late rally to knockoff top-seed Bryan College 8-7 in the elimination bracket of the Williamsburg Bracket of the NAIA Baseball Opening Round Wednesday afternoon at Doyle Buhl Stadium. With the win the Pioneers improve to 47-8, while the Lions finish the season 41-16.
UNOH strikes first as they plated a run in the second. The Racers loaded the bases with one out and Junior Gomez hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice to score Felix Correa and take a 1-0 lead.
Northwestern Ohio took advantage of a pair of Pioneers errors as Blake Maines recorded an RBI single to right to extend the lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, Correa and Dayfran Ortiz both tallied RBI singles to give the Racers a 6-0 lead.
Kyle Fisher added a solo homer run in the fourth, while Jack Barrie belted a three-run shot to left in the eighth to give UNOH a 10-0 lead.
Point Park looked to rally in the ninth as Reynaldo Adames reached on a walk and advanced to third on a Ben Herstine single. Cole Horew tallied a sacrifice fly to score Adames to make the score 10-1. That was the closest the Pioneers got as Mitch Ebben recorded the final two outs of the game for the 10-1 final.
UNOH advances to their first Avista-NAIA World Series in program history and are the first team to punch their ticket.
Correa led the way from UNOH going 3-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Their 1-2-3 hitters combined for five hits, five runs scored, and a pair of RBI. Cole Baker (2-4) earned
the win after pitching 5.1 scoreless innings, scattering six hits with six strikeouts.
Point Park had four players finished with two hits apiece. Jake Forgrave (2-2) took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings allowing one hit and a run scored.
