Williamsburg, KY – After helping their teams get off to strong starts to the season outside hitter Brynnley Bryant and defensive back Tion Garman have been named the Appalachian Wireless Athletes of the Week, the athletic department announced Monday.
Brynnley Bryant earned Athlete of the Week honors after a monster weekend helping UC post a 4-0 record at the IU Kokomo Classic. Bryant tallied 65 kills, 3.82 k/s, to go along with 54 digs, six blocks, and three aces. The junior notched a career-high 24 kills in UC's 3-2 win over #9 Mount Vernon Nazarene. Her 24 kills is the fifth most kills in a match in program history. The Wilmington OH native added 18 kills and nine digs against Marian to close out the tournament. Bryant began the week with 15 kills and 13 digs in the win over Rio Grande. She also notched a career-high 18 digs to go along with eight kills in the win over #13 IU Kokomo. Bryant's performance helped UC improve to 9-1 while leading the team with 3.81 kills per set on the year.
Tion Garmon earned Athlete of the Week honors after strong play helping the Patriots win the Battle for the Brass Lantern. Garmon tallied six tackles, one tackle for loss, an interception, and a pass breakup in the season-opening win over Union Commonwealth. Garmon came up big for UC late in the first quarter. With the Bulldogs driving, Garmon stepped in front of a pass for an interception and returned it 89-yards to the endzone extending UC's lead to 20-7. The junior led the team with six solo tackles in the game.
