Williamsburg, KY – Third-seed Lyon toppled fourth-seed Mobile in an 11-10 duel in the sixth game of the NAIA Opening Round Williamsburg Bracket Tuesday afternoon at Doyle Buhl Stadium. With the win, the Scots improved to 40-21, while the Rams move to 37-22.
Back-to-back errors put two runners on for Lyon in the bottom of the 12th. Kyle West singled to shallow right to juice the bases with Scots. Tristan Buschow sacrifice flied out to bat in Alan West, dramatically ending their seven-inning scoring drought and the extra-inning thriller.
The Rams got out to an early start with one run scored in the early inning. After making his way on a fielder's choice, Trent Avery was batted in by Christian Snow's double down the left line.
In the bottom of the opening frame, the Scots responded with three runs plated off the bat of Kyle West. His look doubled down the left line and cleared the loaded bases.
The Scots tacked on two more in the second, relying on the offensive effort of Kylan Barnett. The lefty slammed a three-run rocket over the right field fence on a one-strike count. Troy Strack also rounded the bases for a run scored from Buschow, giving the home team the 7-1 advantage.
The Rams chalked one more run in the third in attempt to close the margin. Mobile's Blake Carnley singled up the middle while Sam Turner scored on the batted ball.
In response, two home-run balls sailed over the fence for the Scots, furthering their 9-2 lead. Jake Michener boomed the two-out hit over left on the 2-1 count for the solo shot. After slamming for yard in his previous at bat, Barnett followed his teammate with his second homer of the day to right field, also on a two-out, 2-1 count.
The Rams finally held the Scots off the score board in the fourth and came back with two more added to their line in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Christian Poche closed the gap to 9-4 in Lyon's favor with a two-out single up the middle to plate both Kyle Friday and Snow.
Barnett collected his fifth RBI of the game in the fifth inning, allowing Tanner Seibel to cross the plate and head into the dugout. The second baseman could not make the tough play as Barnett hit through the right side for another two-out rally.
Mobile fought back to post three more runs in the sixth, the first off a wild pitch following a change on the mound. Carnley stepped in to single up the middle, scoring Trent Avery and Friday from third and second.
In the seventh, the Scots threatened more with two runners on but grounded themselves into a twin-killing and allow Mobile to escape out of the inning. Kyle West wanted insurance with a deep fly ball in the eighth, looking like it had the distance before fading out and lining into the left fielder's mitt at the track.
Carnley opened the final chance inning with an infield single for the Rams. Gunner Hendrix followed with scorch deep down the right line, taking second with ease, giving Mobile with two runners in scoring position and the tying run at the plate. Logan Palmer drilled a double down the opposite line, batting in his teammate. Dalton Rone singled to the outfield grass, tying the game at 10-10.
Seibel, in the bottom of the ninth, nearly belted the walk-off homer with his double dropping just off the top of the right field fence back into play to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. A shortstop flipped to the second baseman on the fielder's choice, pushing the game into extra innings.
Strack, Kyle West and Buschow loaded the bases for the Scots in the bottom of the 10th with the score tied at 10 apiece. A strikeout ended the inning an all hopes of the extra-inning game ending quickly.
Both teams finished the game with four pitchers featured out of the bullpen. Reese Chovanec garnered his fifth win of the season, enduring the final three innings after Ryan Porres started on the mound for the Scots. Gathering the loss, Hunter Avery saw the mound for the last time of the season, going 3-5 on the year including his 5.1 inning outing in relief.
Lyon advances on, facing the University of the Cumberlands tomorrow in the consolation finals, first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Mobile Rams closed out their 2019 season this afternoon, eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
