Williamsburg, KY – Patriots esports returned to action last weekend, facing off with Tennessee Tech in Rainbow Six before wrapping up their Super Smash Fall Tournament run against Campbellsville on Friday.
Rainbow Six
vs Tennessee Tech L, 0-2 (5-7, 4-7)
In their fifth and final matchup of the season, the UC Rainbow Six squad faced off with the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles boast a seasoned roster of players in the Platinum rank, an advantage over UC's first-year team who rank mainly in Gold. Tennessee Tech got off to a great start on the first map of the day, winning four straight matches amidst their defensive stand. After the two teams switched sides, the Patriots mounted a comeback, winning five straight rounds, fueled by a well-organized defensive strategy. The Golden Eagles were able to edge out the final three victories in the second half, winning the series 7-5.
George Ross had a career performance on the first map, notching a season best 13 kills to lead the Patriots.
Map two presented a unique challenge to the UC squad as they had to compete on a map they haven't yet played in competition. Despite a balanced effort by UC in which each player on the team recorded five or more kills, the Golden Eagles were able to claim the 7-4 victory.
UC wraps up their 2020 Collegiate R6 Tournament run with a record of 2-3. In its first year of competition, the Rainbow Six team made major strides in their team chemistry and tactical ability, with even more improvement expected as the team gears up for play in 2021.
Super Smash Brothers
vs Campbellsville L, 0-2
The Patriots faced off with Campbellsville on Friday for their third Smash Brothers competition of the season. Connectivity issues plagued UC as the team fell to the Tigers in both rounds of play.
In both rounds of the 4v4 match, the Patriots were able to take down three players on the Tigers' lineup, but would be edged out by their fourth and fifth slot players.
Austin Gabehart continued the solid play he's exhibited this season, becoming a consistently reliable part of the Patriots lineup. Newcomer
Tony Jiang had a career day against
Campbellsville, defeating his first opponent outright which is a season best for the freshman.
UC will continue Fall Smash Tournament play this Friday, October 23 as they are slated to take on Manchester University. The live stream provided by UC Esports Twitch can be found here.
