Madisonville, KY – The UC archery team recorded 126 points to finish second at the Mid-South Conference Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon. The Patriots earned four gold medals, five silver medals, and six bronze medals on the day.
The women's bowhunter division led the way as Cumberlands earned all three podium spots.
Sarah Purtee capped off her national record weekend with a gold medal performance in the individual shootdown. After winning her first two matchups, the graduate student defeated Caitlyn McKnight 146-145 to advance to the finals where she edged
Michaela McDonald 144-143 to take gold.
McDonald posted three wins, including a pair of upsets to advance to the championship match. In the quarterfinals McDonald defeated
Kaitlyn Shields in a one-arrow shoot-off to advance to the semifinals where she posted a one-point win over teammate
Madison Cox. Cox rebounded in the bronze medal match with a 147-146 win to give UC the podium sweep.
Cumberlands other individual gold came in the women's recurve division as
Miranda Lauria went 3-0 en route to the gold medal. After earning the top-seed and first-round bye, Lauria posted a 6-2 and 6-4 win to advance to the championship match. In the gold medal match, the junior defeated Casie Metcalf of Lindsey Wilson 6-2 to take the top spot.
Brooke McDonald (barebow) and
Hannah Moose (compound) each earned a bronze medal for UC. McDonald opened the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win to advance to the semifinals. After dropping the semifinals, McDonald rebounded in the bronze medal match defeating Kayla Snyder 6-4 to place third.
Moose opened the day with a 144-137 win over
Amanda Newland before knocking off Jamilee Moore 145-143 to advance to the semifinals. In the bronze medal match, the freshman defeated teammate
Brooke Miller 144-143.
Cumberlands notched a pair of medals in the mixed team rounds, earning a silver and bronze medal. The duo of
Brooke Miller and
Clay Weaver defeated Lindsey Wilson 152-150 in the semifinals, before falling in the championship match to earn eight points. In barebow mixed team, Kimberly Wheat and
Bradley Faulkner teamed up for a 6-0 win over the Blue Raiders to earn the bronze medal.
In the teams rounds,
Dalton Nealy,
Jacob Stidam and
Bradley Faulkner, who enter as the two-seed, knocked off top-seed Pikeville 6-0 in men's barebow team to earn ten points. The women's barebow team of
Brooke McDonald,
Tara Currie, and
Kimberley Wheat notched a runner-up finish for eight points.
UC's final gold medal came from the women's bowhunter team where
Kaitlyn Shields,
Madison Cox, and
Sarah Purtee tallied a 232 to defeat Lindsey Wilson in the gold medal match. g
The Patriots will return to action Wednesday, April 8, when they compete at USA Outdoor Regionals being held in Williamsburg, KY.
