Williamsburg, KY – Patriots women's swimmer Mendy De Rooi and men's wrestler Tres Leon have been selected as the March Wendy's Athletes of the Month, announced by the athletic department Monday. The University of the Cumberlands Athletic Department in their third year partnering with Wendy's to present the "Wendy's Athletes of the Month", which will be award to one male and one female student-athlete each month.

De Rooi was named the female athlete of the month honors after recording three NAIA national titles, breaking four school records, and being named the NAIA Swimmer of the Year.  De Rooi opened the championship by splitting a 1:50.89 leading off the 800 free relay to break the school record. The junior followed that up by winning the 500 free with a time of 4:58.51, before swimming 53.99 to win the 100 fly.  De Rooi capped off her meet by taking top honors in the 100 free as she broke the school record, which had stood for 11 years, finishing with a time of 50.45.  De Rooi was also part of all five relay teams that earned All-American honors to finish the meet as an eight-time NAIA All-American.  De Rooi also captured the NAIA Swim of the Meet for the second straight year for her 100 fly performance. 

Leon earned the male athlete of the month honors after capping off his incredible career with a NAIA national title. Leon, the top-seed in the 149 lbs. weight class, went 5-0 with three falls.  The senior opened the championship with consecutive falls, before defeating ninth-seed Michael Diemer of Campbellsville in a 13-3 major.  In the semifinals, Leon posted a fall over fifth-seed Devin Everk of Menlo to advance to the championship match.  The senior capped of the meet with a 12-5 decision over Denver Stonecheck of Life to win his first national title.
