Williamsburg, KY – University of the Cumberlands has built a tradition of academic and athletic excellence leading to the Patriots countless NAIA postseason appearances and accolades for their success.  A pivotal factor in UC’s success is their dedicated coaching staff that not only brings a wealth of knowledge of their respective sport, but also works hard to ensure success in the classroom as well as being a leader in the community. Head men’s lacrosse coach Pete Campbell has lead his squad to three straight NAIA Invitational Championships but also serves his community as a volunteer firefighter.

Cumberlands in conjunction with its corporate sponsor Legacy Automotive Netowkr is proud to present the “Building A Legacy” series dedicated to spotlighting Patriots coaches that have made an incredible impact in their local community.  These coaches embody the principles of the NAIA Champion of Character Program and sets the tones for their teams.

Since starting the Patriots men’s lacrosse program in 2015, Campbell has made it a mission to instill the importance of giving back to the community and having an impact.  In 2017, Campbell was approached by one of the chiefs with the opportunity to join the West Knox Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and has been in that role for over four years.  The West Knox Fire Department covers parts of Laurel County and out towards Barbourville, KY.

“I was always fascinated with fire fighters growing up and this gave me the ability to give back to the community. This also gave me another hobby outside of coaching.”

According to Coach Campbell the opportunity to volunteer in this community was a goal of his from the moment he moved to the Bluegrass State.  “We do more than just put out fires, we help the community, and trying to make a positive impact.”

Campbell has taken the lessons and principles that he has learned of servant leadership and shares it with his players and coaching staff.  The Patriots men’s lacrosse team has been active in the community taking part in multiple community service projects, including handing out food at the homeless shelter, volunteering at the Lion Chase, and assisted at a hunting camp for people with visual impairments.

“We always want to ensure that we make wherever we are living in the moment and making each placer we go better. We always want to leave everything we have better than we found it and serving a volunteer firefighter shows that I’m not just saying it, I’m actively doing it.”
- Coach Campbell

Cumberlands has posted a 54-28 program record over their first six seasons with Campbell tallying a winning record each year.  UC has advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA Invitational tournament three times and captured the 2019 AAC regular season title.
