Chapman and Riveros Named Patriots Appalachian Wireless October Athletes of the Month

Williamsburg, KY – Patriots outside hitter Lily Chapman and forward Rodrigo Riveros have been selected as the October Athletes of the Month presented by Appalachian Wireless, the athletic department announced Thursday. The University of the Cumberlands Athletic Department in conjunction with their corporate partner Appalachian Wireless are presenting the "Appalachian Wireless Athletes of the Month", which will be award to one male and one female student-athlete each month.

Chapman was named the female athlete of the month honors after recording 149 kills, 123 digs, 15 blocks, and six aces over UC's ten games.  The junior has tallied double-digit kill in nine consecutive matches, has notched eight double-doubles, including seven straight, and is averaging 4.03 kills per set over the month.  The Iron Station, NC native opened the month with 14 kills and 11 digs in the sweep over Union.  Her strong play carried over into conference matches, where she averaged 17.6 kills per match over the course of October.  She tallied 19 kills and 14 digs against UT Southern and the following week helped lead the Patriots to a 3-1 win over (RV) Campbellsville when she recorded a season-high 22 digs to go along with 13 kills.  Chapman converted a season-high 24 kills to pair with 16 digs as UC completed the season sweep over Georgetown for the first time in program history.     The junior closed out the month with a 14 kills, 10 dig performance in the win at Shawnee State to lift Cumberlands to a 7-3 record on the month.  Chapman is currently ranked second in the MSC in kills per set at 3.90, while her 359 kills are fourth most.  She is currently fourth in program history with 1,224 kills.

Riveros earned the male athlete of the month honors after leading the Patriots to a 7-1 record on the month.  The netted nine goals on the month, including scoring in seven consecutive games, and three game-winning goals to help propel the Patriots to second place in the MSC standings.  The Asuncion, Paraguay native opened the month by netting the first goal in the 2-1 win over Freed-Hardeman, which was his first goal of conference play.  He followed that up by notching his first of three game-winning goals when he scored in the 32' against Bethel as UC earned the 1-0 win.  Riveros tallied a pair of braces during the stretch against Pikeville and Georgetown, scoring the game-winning goal in both of those as well.  The freshman capped of the month with key goals against Thomas More and Life to finish the regular season with 12 goals, an assist, and 25 points.  Riveros seven game streak is the most since 2011 when Thiago Andrade netted a goal in six straight games, and is the most consecutive games with a goal scored in the Dakstats era. He is currently ranked fourth in the MSC in goals for a season.
