Williamsburg, KY – After posting unbeaten records on the week wrestlers Chamira Cooper and DeVaughn Sapien have been selected as the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, announced by the athletic department Monday.
Cooper was named the female athlete of the week after winning the 170 lbs. weight class at the Warriors Open. Cooper went 3-0 on the week for her second career tournament win with one win over a ranked opponent. The Cerritos, CA native was dominant across all three matches beginning with a fall (1:41) over 16
th-ranked Catherine McNulty of Indiana Tech. Cooper was leading that match 4-0 at the time of the fall and we saw a similar performance in the semifinals where she had a 4-0 lead over Sierra Chaces of Campbellsville before tallying her second fall of the tournament (1:32). In the championship match, Cooper blanked Adrian's Aspen Dodge on a 10-0 tech fall in the first period to win the 170 lbs. class. Cooper is 18-2 on the season with the two tournament wins to her credit.
Sapien earned the male athlete of the week honors after recording a perfect 6-0 record on the week in dual matches. The Boise, ID native split time between the 125 lbs. and 133 lbs. weight class and notched a fall, a tech fall, a forfeit, and three decisions on the week.
