Oak Ridge, TN – Six Patriots men's track & field athletes made their way to the top of the podium at the Good Friday Challenge. Keith William's top finish led him to be the Patriots lead scorer with 12.5 points, thrower Malik Burns coming in close with 11.
Williams and
Miguel Reis finished one-two in the 400 meters to add 18 points to the Patriots tally. Williams noted a new career best across both the indoor and outdoor seasons with the 51.26-second finish around the lap. Reis clocked 51.62 seconds on the heels of his teammate in the first heat.
A week off the cross country season,
Kyle Woodward and
Kevin Mengich note top spots in the 5,000 meters. Woodward won the event for the first time of his career, posting a 16:09.35 finish. Mengich followed in third with a time of 16:45.81.
Ken Cobb, in his second 100-meter attempt as a Patriot, improved in both time and place at Friday's meet. The junior placed second down the straight with a time of 10.83 seconds. He followed with another scoring performance in the 200 meters, 22.33 seconds to get around the curve and place third.
Matthew Chavers, TaDarien McIntosh, Williams and Cobb posted a new team best for the 4x100 meter relay, also placing first overall. Around the lap, they combined for a time of 43.44 seconds, a couple tenths faster than the time at Montreat.
Lamar Harris cleared 1.75 meters in high jump, his first collegiate attempt at the event. The height was good for second place.
Chandler Powell's best long jump mark of the day was 5.49 meters off the board, placing eighth.
All four throwers finished in the top-eight of at least one event. Malik Burns finished seventh and eighth in hammer and discus while his best event of the day was a second-place finish in shot put, tossing 12.78 meters.
Lucas Lambo placed fifth in both shot put and hammer, improving by over a half meter in shot from a week ago.
James Crawford took fifth in discus with a toss of 38.59 meters as well as seventh in shot put.
Jhawan Horton placed fourth in hammer with a mark of 44.24 meters and had a career best shot put mark to move him to eighth.
Caleb Gentry pushed the pace to finish seventh overall the 1,500 meters at his first collegiate outdoor track meet. His personal time to beat has been set at 4:25.22.
Cumberlands finished third overall against four other NAIA teams in attendance at Oak Ridge HS outside of Knoxville, TN. Tennessee Wesleyan won their hosted invitational with 222 points, Reinhardt followed with 110.75 while Cumberlands finished next with 99.25. The Patriots are set to compete next weekend at the Flames Invitational at Lee University in Tennessee.
