Williamsburg, KY – After another successful week of postseason action, goalie Olivia McCarrell and centerfielder Bryan Leef have been selected as the Domino's Athletes of the Week, announced by the athletic department Monday.
McCarrell was named the female athlete of the week after recording 49 saves and leading the Patriots to their first NAIA National Runner-Up finish. The freshman came up big this week as she tied her career-high with 18 saves in the Patriots 18-7 win over SCAD in the NAIA quarterfinals. McCarrell followed that up with 17 saves, including 11 in the second half in the national semifinals against Life. She now has averaged 16.7 saves per game against the Running Eagles this season. The Seymour, TN native capped off her season with 14 saves in the championship game. McCarrell also scooped eight ground balls and tallied a pair of caused turnovers en route to being an All-Tournament Team selection.
Leef earned the male athlete of the week honors after his dominating performance during the MSC Championships. The MSC Player of the Year recorded seven hits, seven runs scored, five homers, and 11 RBI's over the Patriots three games. Leef opened the weekend by smashing a grand slam to right center in the bottom of the second inning to give UC a 6-0 lead over Lindsey Wilson. Against Freed-Hardeman, Leef went 2-5 with three runs scored. With Cumberlands trailing 2-0, Leef singled in the bottom of the fifth and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run as part of a five run inning. He would later add a solo homerun in the eighth as UC advanced to the championship game. During the championship game Leef was unstoppable as he belted a three-run bomb in the third inning and followed that up with a two-run shot in the fourth inning to even the score at 8-8. The game would be tied in the bottom of the ninth when the Yorba Linda, CA native stepped up and smashed the walk-off homerun to left field giving UC the MSC Tournament Title.
