Williamsburg, KY – With fall sports winding down and winter sports hitting the ground running the Patriots have continued to be dominant on the field. Based on their performances during the week golfer Ginevra Capo and swimmer Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira were selected as the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, announced by the athletic department Monday.
Ginevra Capo earned athlete of the week honors after earning Medalist honors during the Mid-South Conference Fall Invite. Capo carded consecutive 76 (+4) in the second and third rounds to climb the leaderboard and finish on top with a 54-hole total of 233. The freshman opened the tournament with one birdie and ten pars for an 81 (+9), before going one-under-par through the first nine holes of round two before closing out with a 76 (+4) to climb into fifth place. In the final round, Capo birdied her fifth day and played steady over the final 18 holes to climb four spots to the top of the individual leaderboard. Not only did she capture Medalist honors, she also helped the lead the team to a runner-up finish.
Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira earned athlete of the week honors after winning three races and achieving a pair of NAIA provisional cuts. Gonzalez de Oliveira touched the wall in 1:42.32 to pull away from the field and win the 200 free with a time of 1:42.32. That time was five seconds faster than the provisional cut and is the fourth fastest time in the NAIA this season. The Madrid, Spain native followed that 100 by clocking a 46.04 in the 100 free for his second win of the meet. That time was over two seconds faster than the provisional cut and is the third fastest time in the NAIA this season. Gonzalez de Oliveira opened the meet by anchoring UC's 200 medley relay to a win with a time of 1:35.17, which ranks third in the NAIA.
