Williamsburg, KY – After helping their respective teams go undefeated in non-conference play, guard Kaylie Monday and forward Steven Fitzgerald were selected as the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, announced by the athletic department Monday.
Kaylie Monday earned athlete of the week honors after recording her first career double-double in the win over IU East. The sophomore notched a career-high 23 points and 10 steals to go along with six assists and five rebounds in the win over the Red Wolves. Monday went 10-17 from the field in the game and had 13 points, four steals, and three assists in the first quarter to help UC jump out to a 36-10 lead. The Clarkrange, TN native added eight points and four steals in the third quarter before notching her tenth steal of the game in the fourth period. The ten steals in the win rank second in program history as Monday leads the NAIA in steals so far this season.
Steven Fitzgerald earned athlete of the week honors after averaging 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game over the two games. Fitzgerald opened the week with 20 points, six rebounds, and a steal in the Patriots 78-56 win over Alice Lloyd. The senior followed that up with 21 points on 7-13 shooting with six rebounds an assist and a steal in the win over (RV) West Virginia Tech. The Somerset, KY native was the catalyst for the Patriots offense as he netted 13 points and five rebounds in the first half of the game. With the win, UC improves to 5-0 on the season for the second straight season under Coach Matt Daniel.
