Williamsburg, KY – After helping their teams win the Mid-South Conference championships and being named the MSC Swimmer of the Year for their respective sport, Hanne te Velthuis and Kacper Sobieszuk have been selected as the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, announced by the athletic department Monday.
 
Te Velthuis was named the female athlete of the week after winning all eight of her races that she competed in and was the lone swimmer to win all three of their individual races.  The sophomore opened the meet by posting a career best time of 23.77 to win the 50 free, which is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season.  She followed that up by clocking a 1:54.39 in the 200 free, before winning the 100 free with a time of 52.35.  te Velthuis was also a staple on the Patriots relays helping UC to win all five relays and become an eight-time MSC First-Team All-Conference selection.  The Beerzarveld, Netherlands native becomes the fourth Patriot to be named MSC Swimmer of the Year.


 
Sobieszuk earned the male athlete of the week honors after recording four podium finishes, including three gold medals at the MSC Championship.  The freshman tallied his first conference title in the 100 fly, where he went 50.10 to edge out teammate Martin Herion by 0.03 seconds for the win.  Sobieszuk followed that up by clocking a 1:49.57 in the prelims of the 200 fly, setting a new meet record and achieving an "A" standard.  He followed that up in the finals notching his second gold medal with a time of 1:50.59.  The Lublin, Poland native opened the meet with a bronze medal in the 200 IM as he went 1:54.35 in the event.  He capped off his week by being part of Cumberlands 200 medley relay that set a new meet record with a time of 1:33.06.  He becomes just the second Patriot to be named MSC Swimmer of the Year and he was also named the MSC Freshman of the Year.
