Baseball Splits a Pair against Cumberland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots drops the series opener against the Phoenix 9-5, before winning game two 17-7 in a run rule on Thursday afternoon. In game two, Andres Rolon and Luis Alvarez got their first homeruns of the season. UC advances to 14-8 on the season.

Game Two:

Thomas Gutierrez got the start and pitched 4.2 innings allowing eight hits, four earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts. Jake Kmiecik came in relief and pitched 3.1 innings giving up three hits, two runs and four strikeouts. Kmiecik get his first win of the season.

Rolon led the way this game, going 3-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Ray Villanueva went 3-5 with a double. While Muniz also went 3-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Alvarez also had a good day at the plate going 2-4 with a homer and four RBIs.

UC got their offense started early, as Almanzar got the one out walk. Two batters later with two outs Sujel Arias hit a two-run shot over the left field fence for the early 2-0 lead.
In the next at bat, Benner got the leadoff walk. Three batters later Cheely would get hit by a pitch. Almanzar followed with a walk. Then Muniz stepped to the plate with two outs. He hit a two RBI double down the left field line, for the 4-0 lead.

In the third inning, The Pats put up five runs for the 9-0 lead. Encarnacion got a leadoff single through the 5-6 hole. Villanueva followed with a single through the right side. Benner then sneaked another single through the right side. Now, with the bases loaded Rolon got walked which led to a run scoring. Luis Alvarez then stepped to the plate and found a pitch he loved as he hit a grand slam down the left field line, for the 9-0 lead.

After the Phoenix scored one, the Patriots scored a run of their own in their next at bat. With one out, Villanueva doubled to left field. Two batters later Rolon hit an RBI single to left field, this made the score 10-1.

Cumberland responded with four runs cutting the UC lead to 10-5, in the bottom of the fifth. The Pats responded with a one out single by Benner. Rolon would single through the right side which allowed Benner to get all the way to third. Two batters later, Cheely would hit a two-out triple to right center bringing home both Benner and Rolon, for the 12-5 lead.

The Patriots added one more run to the lead in the top of the seventh. With one out Arias reached on an error. Two batters later, Villanueva singled up the middle. With two outs, Benner got an RBI single, then Villanueva was called out at home for the third out after the first runner reached.

In the top of the eighth, Rolon stepped to the plate and hit a leadoff homerun over the right field fence. Alvarez then got hit by a pitch. Two batters later Almanzar singled through the 5-6 hole. Muniz followed with an RBI double down the left field line. This made the score 15-7. After, Almanzar scored on a wild pitch, Arias got a ground out RBI, for the 17-7 lead. The game was then called becasue of the 10 run rule in conference play.
 
Game One:

Braxton Cottongame got the start in game one and pitched 5.1 innings. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Caleb Plummer came in relief and pitched 0.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk. Cottongame would get the loss.

On the offensive side for the Pats, Charlie Muniz led the way going 3-3 at the plate and a walk. Andres Rolon came in late and hit UC's only double.

After being held scoreless through the first three innings, the score was 5-0. Muniz opened the inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later Candido Encarnacion singled through the 4-3 hole, which moved Kevin Perez to third. Then a sacrifice fly by Ray Villanueva would get the Pats on the board.

After Cumberland increased their lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth, UC would score four runs to cut the deficit to 9-5. Rolon opened the inning by doubling down the right field line. Ernies Lozada then reached on an error. Sean Cheely sacrifice bunted to move both base runners ahead. Raphy Almanzar would then get an RBI ground out. Two batters later, Sujel Arias hit an RBI single to right
field for a 9-3 score. Encarnacion then got walked to fill the bases, followed by another walk this time by Villanueva. This walk scored another run. Seth Benner came to the plate and hit an RBI single up the middle. That would be the last run of the game for the 9-5 loss.

The Patriots are back in action to end the series tomorrow March 11th at 1 pm eastern time.
