Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots have continued their strong start to the 2022-2023 season. Based on their performances during the week goalie Georgia Martell and linebacker Walker Dunn were selected as the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, announced by the athletic department Monday.
Georgia Martell earned athlete of the week honors after making 12 saves against a pair of top-ten opponents to help UC go 2-0-1 on the week. The sophomore opened the week making four second half saves against seventh-ranked Marian. Those saves kept the Knights scoreless helping the Patriots earn a 0-0 draw for their first shutout of the season. The Brisbane, Australia native followed that up with a season-high eight stops in Cumberlands 2-1 win over third-ranked Central Methodist. The win is the Patriots first top-five road win since at least 2001. The eight saves tie Martell's career-high, which she set last season against Cumberland. The Patriots are 3-0-1 on the season with all four games coming against teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the national poll.
Walker Dunn earned athlete of the week honors after tallying a team-high 10 tackles and a sack in Cumberlands 30-6 season opening win. Dunn recorded a team-best five solo tackles and posted a pair of tackles for loss in the game. The Athens, AL native, who transitioned to linebacker this season, made four tackles in the third quarter anchoring the UC defense which limited Union to -5 yards of offense during the quarter. UC's defense held the Bulldogs scoreless with 50 yards of offense over the final 30 minutes. It was the Patriots fourth straight Brass Lantern win, which is the third longest win streak in the rivalry.
