Louisville, KY – The Patriots women's track and field team secured their second straight Mid-South Conference Indoor Title in dominant fashion Friday in Louisville. Cumberlands finished their day with eight individual champions, seven of which set new meet records. The Pats swept all the top conference awards as well as
Elizabeth Lucason earned MSC Athlete of the Year,
Alina Boshchuk was named MSC Freshman of the Year, and Coaches
Bradley Sowder and
James Overholser were voted Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year as well.
UC's middle distance and distance runners were unstoppable on the track, winning every event from the 800m to the 5K. Lucason was a major factor in these events, winning the 800m, 1000m, and mile. She set a meet record in all three events as well. In the 800, the sophomore clocked a 2:19.92 for the gold.
Savannah Hossfeld was right behind her for second while
Ashlyn Liddle placed fourth.
Ella Henage and
Heather Durrant also scored in the 800m with fifth and eighth place finishes, respectively.
In the 1K, Lucason finished in 3:01.66 for a meet record. Hossfeld earned her second silver of the day followed by Henage who placed fourth for her second scoring finish.
Elisa Helferich added three points to the team score after finishing sixth while
Hannah Durrant came in seventh to round out the Patriot finishers in the race.
The mile saw UC place first through fourth. Lucason led the way once again with a 5:01.11 A standard finish.
Heather Durrant earned the silver while
Alina Boshchuk won bronze. Liddle placed fourth to score once again for UC and
Chloe West finished eighth to as the final scorer in the contest.
Boshchuk dominated the 3K and 5K runs on Friday. She clocked a meet record time of 10:15.14 in the 3K for gold medal honors.
Elke Wijkmans finished just behind her for the silver.
Lismar Betancourt finished fourth overall while Durrant,
Abriella Overholser, and Anna Rusing also had scoring finishes placing sixth, seventh, and eighth.
Four of those five also scored in the 5K led once again by Boshchuk who clocked a meet record 17:45.87. Wijkmans earned another second-place finish as she crossed the line three seconds behind her teammate. Betancourt placed sixth while Rusing cruised to a seventh-place finish.
The 3K racewalk was the final distance event on the day and the Pats did not disappoint.
Heather Durrant paced a new meet record 13:37.04 for first place.
Alexa Governor finished second while
Hannah Durrant rounded out the top-three.
Lilian Bittencourt finished fourth while
Ava Newkirk walked to a fifth-place finish.
Isabelle Blatz rounded out UC's finishers as they tallied 34 points total from the one event.
Both relay squads earned silver medals to round out UC's scoring on the track. The DMR started the day with a 13:29.94 time.
Maelyn Cooper started the race before
Beatriz De Souza took over. Helferich handled the third leg before Overholser finished as the anchor. Cooper and Helferich ran the opening legs of the 4x800 as well before
Hannah Durrant and
Emma Campbell finished the race. Campbell crossed the finish line for a combined time of 10:34.59 for second overall.
A pair of Pats earned gold medals in field events on Friday.
Mya Hines set a new meet record in the high jump with a 1.60m mark.
Kalaiya Dixon finished top-three in the event for a medal.
Jaci Woods placed fifth overall while
Paige Newby got in on the scoring after placing seventh. Hines also scored in the 60m hurdles and the long jump. The freshman earned a bronze medal in LJ with a 5.20m leap and she finished fourth in the hurdles with a time of 9.76. Woods also had another scoring performance for UC, placing fourth in the triple jump event with a 10.58m mark.
Trinity Sherrod was the final Patriot individual champion on the day. She won the pole vault once again with a 3.05m clearance.
Morgan Weatherspoon and
Amber Avery finished with a sweep of the podium, adding 14 more points to the team score.
The 600m featured
Ashley Terry as the lone Patriot competitor. She raced to a second-place finish after crossing the finish line in 1:39.17.
Abia Kante had a great day in the sprints, setting the new program records in the 200m and 400m dashes. She clocked a 25.35 for fourth in the 200m and finished third in the 400m after running a 57.38.
Four Pats scored in the weight throw for UC.
Maggie Buerger earned a second-place finish with a 14.13m throw.
Emma Hall finished just off the podium in fourth while
Pia Stern and
Taylor Lunsford placed seventh and eighth.
Buerger also led a trio of Cumberlands throwers in the shot put with an 11.51m mark for third, earning her second medal of the day. Lunsford placed fifth while Hines finished sixth.
UC scored 297.5 points to take home the MSC Championship title by a landslide. The second-place finisher, Cumberland University, scored 190 points while Campbellsville placed third with 111 points respectively.
UC now looks ahead to the NAIA National Championships where they have the most national qualifiers in program history. The championships are scheduled for February 29
th through March 2
nd in Brookings, SD.
