Pats Have Strong Performance at Early Spring Home Meet

Williamsburg, KY – UC's women opened their outdoor season on their home track at the Cumberlands Early Spring Meet and did not disappoint. The Patriots finished the day with five event winners and 15 top-three finishes for second place overall in the team scoring.
 
A trio of Pats earned first-place finishes in field events on Friday. Mya Hines led the way in the high jump with a 1.59m best for the gold. Kalaiya Dixon followed close behind for second after clearing a 1.54m height while Makayla Clark rounded out the top-three with a 1.49m mark. Paige Newby placed fifth on the day with a 1.39m mark.
 
The pole vault saw the Patriots finish one through four with Trinty Sherrod on top after a 3.01m clearance. Amber Avery came in second with a mark of 2.55m while Morgan Weatherspoon earned a bronze finish after clearing a height of 2.40m on her second attempt. Mikaela Shock was the fourth-place finisher with a 2.25m mark for UC. Avery and Sherrod also entered the javelin throw and posted impressive finishes. Avery had a best mark of 33.28m for second place while Sherrod finished fourth after a 24.55m throw.
 
The final field winner for Cumberlands was Pia Stern in the hammer throw. The freshman threw her hammer 46.12m on her third attempt for the victory. Emma Hall was the other UC scorer in the vent, placing eighth after a 35.57m toss. Stern and Hall finished back-to-back in the discus, placing fourth and fifth behind throws of 30.05m and 29.30m. Meagan Petty placed sixth in the discus after a 23.27m toss while Taylor Lunsford had a 20.60m best mark for seventh.
 
UC came away with a pair of victories in track events. Abia Kante was the lone Pat in in the 400m and crossed the finish line in first after clocking a 57.96 finish. The 5000m also saw a solo Patriot competitor who earned a victory as well. Maelyn Cooper ran the 5K in 19:52.51 for first place, over six minutes faster than the second-place finisher. De Souza also ran the 200m where she clocked a 26.79 for third place. Hines also entered the blocks for the 200, placing sixth in 27.18.
 
Ella Henage earned a silver medal finish in the 800m to lead a trio of Pats in the event. The sophomore paced a 2:30.65 for second. Emma Campbell followed close behind her teammate, finishing in 2:34.19 for third while Chloe West clocked a 2:41.68 for fifth.
 
Henage also led UC's runners in the 1500 where she crossed the finish in 5:11.13 for third. West clocked a 5:26.35 finish for fourth while Hannah Henage and Anna Rusing posted fifth and sixth place performances. H. Henage ran her 1500 in 5:27.96 while Rusing paced a 5:29.21.
 
 
The 200m featured Jaida Reed as UC's top finisher. Reed clocked a 12.85 finish for second overall. Beatriz De Souza placed fifth with a 13.28 finish while Dixon came away with seventh place after running a 13.37.
 
Jaci Woods was the final track competitor in the home meet, placing fifth in the 100m hurdles. The freshman hurdled her way to an 18.85 finish for fifth overall.
 
The shot put rounded out UC's day as a trio of Patriots earned scoring finishes. Hines hit the 10.36m mark on her first throw of the day for fifth while Hall came in just behind her after a 10.23m toss. Lunsford rounded out the scorers in the shot with a 9.97m best.
 
Cumberlands will be back next weekend as they travel to Montreat, NC for a two-day meet.
