Women Dominate the Competition for Second-Straight MSC Outdoor Title

Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots women's track & field team won the MSC Outdoor Championship for the second year in a row and made history as the first school in the Mid-South Conference to win cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships in a single season on both the women and the men's side. The Pats came away with five individual wins on the final day to secure their team title.
 
A trio of Patriots earned top-honors from the MSC. James Overholser was named Mid-South Assistant Coach of the Year while Alina Boshchuk and Mya Hines were named co-Freshman of the Year after scoring 20 points each.
 
The 1500m run saw UC's first win of the day out of Boshchuk who clocked a 4:41.46 for her second gold medal of the weekend. Elizabeth Lucason placed second with a 4:45.52 finish for All-Conference honors as well. Ashlyn Liddle and Elke Wijkmans raced down the backstretch together for finishes of 4:51.17 and 4:51.92 for fourth and fifth while Heather Durrant crossed the finish line sixth with a time of 4:54.94. Elisa Helferich was the final UC scorer in the race, clocking a 5:08.67 finish for eighth. Cumberlands added 31 points to their team score in the 1500m.
 
 Savannah Hossfeld earned a First-Team All-Conference finish in the 800m run. She clocked a 2:18.87 in her two laps around the track. Lucason ran a 2:20.59 for third while Ashlyn Liddle and Ashley Terry finished fourth and fifth with times of 2:22.69 and 2:23.18. Helferich also posted a scoring performance with a time of 2:27.00 for seventh.
 
Mya Hines earned a pair of first-place finishes in the heptathlon and high jump competition. She finished the heptathlon with 4151 points after winning six of the seven events. Jaci Woods placed second in the hep after recording 3283 points through seven events. Woods also scored in the triple jump, placing fourth after jumping 10.81m.
 
The final event of the meet saw UC earn gold as Maggie Buerger won the discus throw with a 39.67m toss. Pia Stern recorded a seventh-place finish after hitting a 30.22m mark. Buerger was the lone scorer for UC in the shot put. The sophomore finished third behind a 10.93m mark.
 
The high jump saw three Patriot scorers led once again by Hines. She cleared the bar at 1.55m for the gold medal while Makayla Clark tied for third place behind a 1.45m best on her first attempt. Paige Newby came away with seventh overall, adding two points to the team score after a 1.40m mark.
 
Back on the track, Cumberlands scored 17 points as a team in the 5K. Lismar Betancourt led the way with a silver-medal finish, crossing the finish line in 18:04.07. Anna Rusing, Hannah Henage, and Maelyn Cooper earned fifth through seventh place. Rusing finished her 5K in 19:36.89 while Henage and Cooper ran 19:46.17 and 19:49.16 respectively.
 
Kathryn Couch and Amelia Richardson finished third and fourth in the 100m hurdles with times of 15.68 and 17.58. Couch ran a 26.15 in the 200m finals on Monday as well. The 100m dash also saw a Patriot on the podium as Allison Bryson ran a 12.60 for third.
 
The sprinters combined for a third-place finish in the 4x100. Bryson ran the opening leg before passing the baton to Abia Kante. Beatriz De Souza took over for leg three and handed the baton to Couch who crossed the finish line for a combined 48.53 finish.
 
De Souza and Couch also ran in the 4x400, where they combined with Lucason and terry for fourth overall. The team clocked a combined time of 4:15.37. De Souza was the lone Patriot scorer in the 400m dash, finishing her lap in 1:01.28.
 
Cumberlands finished the meet with 283 points for a dominant team victory. Cumberland University scored 208 points for second while Campbellsville placed third with 176 points, respectively.
 
UC will now look forward to the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in Marion, IN.
