Gainesville, FL – The Patriots came up just short of a historic comeback, going from 10th in the team standings to second place, earning national runner-up at the 2025 NAIA Indoor T&F Championships. A pair of individual national champions, and seven other All-American finishes propelled UC to second place in the team standings.
Luca Madeo put on a show in the 5000m with a 14:06.19 school record finish to win the title and score 10 points for the Patriots. Madeo led majority of the race but went into the last lap in second place before kicking in the final 150 meters to earn the victory by almost four seconds. Serhii Shevchenko also scored for UC in the 5K with a 14:29.10 time for sixth overall. This 13-point swing in UC's favor gave the Pats the push they needed for the team podium.
Youssef Asslouj also won an individual title on Saturday, winning the 3K for the second straight indoor season. The sophomore clocked an 8:14.95 for first place overall, and 10 more points towards the team score. Noah McClellan finished ninth overall with an 8:29.16 to finish just outside the scorers while Noah Loser clocked an 8:29.62 for 11th.
The 400m dash saw Jaysaun Smith battle for third overall with a new school record time of 46.51, just two hundredths of a second behind the second-place finisher. UC's sprinters continued to score points as Travion Dotson came away with sixth in the 60m dash behind a 6.77 finish. Cam Andrews also finished sixth in the finals of the 200m for three more team points. He crossed the finish line in 21.30.
The final two races of the meet were the DMR and 4x400 relays where UC made one final push at the team standings. The DMR was one of the best races of the meet, with UC coming up just one hundredth of a second short to Marian for second place. Victor Carpeggiani ran the first leg before Eddie Van Wyk took over for the 400m. Max Young took the baton for leg number three before passing it to Asslouj who crossed the finish line in a new school record time of 9:51.45, just behind the winning time of 9:51.44.
UC entered the blocks in the final race of the championships down six in the standings. They did everything they could in the 4x400 as Kerrington Eubanks and Roderick Soto ran the first two legs before Cam Andrews took the baton for the third. He passed the honors off to Smtih, who held the lead and won the opening heat with a new school record time of 3:10.81. This time would end up third overall and finish the indoor championships for UC.
Cumberlands totaled 64 meets for second behind Marian who won the championship with 74 team points. Doane scored 39 points ofr third while Life and Milligan rounded out the top-five with 31 and 30 points, respectively.
UC now look ahead to the outdoor season where they will look to build off their performances and win their second-straight NAIA Outdoor Title.
