Fort Wayne, IN –
Leonardo Daley clocked the Patriots second standard of the season on Friday at the Strive for Greatness Invitational. Meanwhile, Cumberlands swept one-two-three in the mile, highlighting the final day of the Strive for Greatness Invitational at Indiana Tech.
Daley, second-year sprinter out of Jamaica, broke his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles, showing 8.33 across the line. The time is his best finish to date, passing his previous best set at the Mid-South Conference Championships last February.
He placed third overall in the event, coming in as the number-four seed from the qualifying round. He improved the preliminary time by 0.15 seconds in the finals.
Caleb Gentry, freshman out of Louisville, let the field with his first top-position race of the season. His time of 4:46.75 earned him the first-place spot. On his heels, returner
Kyle Woodward placed second with a time of 4:58.53. It is his second-best time in the event, pacing less than a second faster in his rookie season at the Tom Hathaway Distance Classic.
Patriots took third as well in the form of Sam Golden, also running in his collegiate track debut on Friday. He crossed the line at 5:01.47 to set a benchmark for the rest of the season. Teammate
Zach Pennington rounded out the Patriots in fifth with a time of 5:02.73.
Ken Cobb had a standout day to start the season. The junior transfer placed third in the 60-meter prelims with a time of 6.96 seconds, only 0.03 seconds shy of a B-cut. An unfortunate false start dropped him out of the finals.
Later in the 200 meters, Cobb placed eighth overall with a time of 22.79 seconds. The finished clocked 0.43 slower than a qualifying mark before conversion.
The men competed in the long jump as the sole field event seeing Patriot appearances on day two. Cumberlands was led by 2020 NAIA qualifier
Matthew Chavers in fifth place. His jump of 6.77 meters led the collegiate field through the first attempt, later improving his mark to 6.85 meters.
Chandler Powell finished the day in 10th with a leap of 5.88 meters in his second attempt.
