UC Only Concedes Four Hits In A Pair of Wins

Williamsburg, KY – The Cumberlands pitching staff was lights out for day two of the Bear Creek Tournament. A combined effort from Morgan Radford, Kaiti White and Lindsey Shope shut down both IU South Bend and Cleary, with two shutout wins. The Patriots took game one, 3-0 over the Titans and then finished off the Cougars 7-0.

Radford pitched the complete game shutout against IU South Bend only allowing four base runners on for the Titans. She posted a season best of five strikeouts over the seven innings. In game two, White got the start and went 5.0 innings, striking out a trio of batters and giving up just two hits. Shope came in for her first appearance of the season for two innings and did not give up a hit in just 18 pitches.

Offensively, Cumberlands recorded 19 hits over the two contests with six of them for extra base hits. Paxton Hoop, Makenzie Keatts, Mackenzie Pawlak, Emily Bryant and Bailey Turnbow all had three hits over the two games. Turnbow had the most extra base hits with a triple and a double. Carly Oliver hit her second home run of the season over the left field fence.

GAME ONE: PATRIOTS SHUTOUT TITANS, 3-0
After a three up, three down on defense, UC got themselves a run on the board. Turnbow had a single up the middle and swiped second. She moved to third on a fielder's choice and then Hoop brought her in off a single to center field to put Cumberlands up 1-0.

Once again defense turned to offense and the Pats added another run in the third after a quick defensive inning. Keatts walked and stole second to move into scoring position. Bryant scored her with a well hit ball to left center making the score 2-0.

Radford struck out two in the fifth inning and then the Pats added an insurance run in the sixth. With two outs, Pawlak roped a ball through the left side and then stole second. Hoop made sure to make it count sending a ball to left field for her second RBI.

A runner got on for the Patriots, but Radford struckout the final out to earn the 3-0 win.

GAME TWO: CUMBERLANDS BLANKS CLEARY, 7-0
White got three straight outs to start the game and the UC offense got to work. With Wood on second after a walk and a stolen base, Oliver sent a shot over the left field fence, but the offense did not stop there. Bryant singled up the middle and moved to second. Bryant then used heads up base running, to score from second off a ball that did not leave the infield. Her run made the score 3-0 in favor of Cumberlands.

In the third inning, White fanned two batters and the offense for UC took over once again. Sickau led the inning off with a single. Pawlak followed it up with a single herself to put Sickau at third. Livingston launched the ball to right center for her fourth double of the season, making it a four-run lead.

The Cougars had their two hits of the game in the fourth, but White settled into the inning and struck out the last batter with a strikeout looking. Another two out rally put up runs for Cumberlands in the bottom half of the inning, this time their biggest frame on the day. Keatts had a well struck ball up the middle and then scored off a RBI double from Bryant. The Cougars tried to throw out Keatts at home and it allowed Bryant to advance to third. Cleary then tried to pick off Bryant during Sickau's at bat and she took off for home for the second run in the inning. Sickau walked and Turnbow laced the ball to right center for her first triple as a Pat, making the score 7-0.

Shope entered the game in the sixth with the seven run lead, she recorded five groundouts and a popout to secure the win and improve UC to 6-1 on the season.

Cumberlands will finish up the Bear Creek Tournament with a pair of games on Sunday, February 19. They will play (RV) Rio Grande and IU South Bend at 2:00PM ET and 4:30PM ET respectively.
