Williamsburg, KY – The women's track & field team opened the season in multiple meets this week including the GVSU Holiday Open, the Liberty Kickoff, and the Indiana Tech Warrior Open. The team hit four national cuts with two "A" standards, respectively.
The Patriots racewalking squad knocked out a pair of 'A" cuts at the Warrior Open on Friday with Alexa Governor taking the victory in 14:51.78 while Lilian Bittencourt clocked a 15:31.61 for third place.
Mya Hines had an impressive start to her sophomore season, breaking a pair of school records at the Liberty Kickoff. Hines competed in the pentathlon, blowing her previous school record out of the water with 3553 points for fifth against high-level competition. She also broke the program's high jump record, clearing the bar at 1.67m for a national standard as well. She currently ranks first in the NAIA in the pentathlon, and second in the high jump. Lillian Guzman made her debut in the Patriot kit in group A of the pentathlon, finishing the competition with 2302 points. Jaci Woods also made the trip to Virginia for the pentathlon, recording a personal best 2812 points for seventh in the B group.
The GVSU Holiday Open was the final meet that featured a Patriot this weekend, as three women traveled to Michigan for the highly competitive meet. Tarikua Majocchi led the way with a "B" standard in the 5K, running a 17:31.81 for 14th place. Maelyn Barker also competed in the 5K, finishing in 18:34.18 for 26th in the third heat.
Abia Kante rounded out UC's competitors on Friday, entering the blocks for the 200m and 400m sprints. The sophomore clocked a 25.25 200m time for 6th overall and was the fastest NAIA finisher as well. In the 400m, Kante ran a 57.60 for ninth, marking her second top-10 finish of the evening.
Cumberlands will be back in action tomorrow as they compete at the Commonwealth Opener in Louisville, KY.
