Pats Secure Five All-Americans and Sit in First Place after Day Two of the NAIA Championships

Gainesville, FL – The Patriots women's track & field team had a dominant day two at the NAIA Indoor Championships, jumping to first overall in the team standings behind five All-American performances.

 

The day started with a runner-up finish in the 3K racewalk from Alexa Governor. The sophomore clocked a 14:20.98 to score eight team points and earned her second-straight indoor All-American honor of her career. Ava Newkirk placed fourth overall in 14:37.69 while Lilian Bittencourt crossed the finish line in 15:31.56 to combine for seven more points and two more All-Americans for the Pats.

Abia Kante had a career day on Friday with a runner-up finish in the long jump along with a pair of qualifying performances in the 60m and 200m dashes. She started the LJ with a 5.91m leap in her first attempt for a new school record. She then went straight to the 60m dash, where she clocked a 7.51 to make the finals and break another program record. After completing the long jump and earning All-American honors as the national runner up, Kante then ran a 24.64 200m time to make the finals as well.

After earning a national runner-up finish of her own yesterday, Mya Hines came back with a third-place overall finish in the high jump to earn the second All-American honors of the meet. The sophomore cleared a height of 1.74m on her second attempt to claim the bronze medal and score the Patriots six more points. Hines also competed in the long jump where she finished 12th with a 5.67m mark.

Sharon Jemeli was the final Patriot in action on the second day of competition. She cruised to a first-place finish in the 3K prelims with a 10:08.33 time to earn the top seed in tomorrow's final.

Cumberlands now has 37 points to lead the team standings heading into the final day of competition. Siena Heights sits in second with 29 while Doane rounds out the top three with 23 points, respectively.

UC looks to finish strong tomorrow for a chance at the program's first national championship with athletes competing in the finals of the 60m, 200m, 3K, 5K, and DMR.
