Williamsburg, KY - After leading the University of the Cumberlands baseball program for the past quarter of a century and 31 years as a collegiate head coach, Patriots Head Baseball Coach
Brad Shelton has announced his retirement from coaching, concluding one of the most successful eras in Patriot Athletics history, it was announced on Tuesday.
"This has been my dream job. I'm so thankful for my time as head baseball coach at UC. God blessed me with the opportunity 31 years ago to do what I always wanted to do," said Coach Shelton. "My family, especially my wife, Candy, have poured into me & our program. I am so grateful to her and all she has done for me and our players over the past 31 years. I could go on and on with a list of people to thank. Randy Vernon gave me a shot and was a mentor to me. Dr. Cockrum & Chris Kraftick and more recently, Dr. Young provided support and resources to build the program."
Shelton leaves Cumberlands as the winningest coach in program history with 961 victories, compiling an overall record of 961-419 during his tenure in Williamsburg and 1,150 career wins overall. Over the course of his career at UC, Shelton transformed the Patriots into a perennial national contender, guiding the program to three consecutive NAIA World Series appearances (2023, 2024, 2025), capturing three NAIA Opening Round Championships, eight Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year honors, and was named ABCA/ATEC NAIA Regional Coach of the Year three times.
Coach Shelton added, "I've had so many great assistant coaches who did most of the work and got a little of the credit.
Jared Martin, Associate Head Coach, took recruiting to a level never seen at Cumberlands. To every player who ever played here for me, I owe them a huge thank you! Because of them, I was able to be a part of this special place. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our program. I hope we left it better than we found it."
Shelton arrived at Cumberlands in the fall of 2001, inheriting a team that had gone 7-34 the previous season. In his first year, he engineered one of the biggest turnarounds in college baseball, leading the Patriots to a 34-29 record in 2002 — a 27-win improvement that ranked as the largest turnaround at any collegiate level that season.
That success became the foundation for more than two decades of sustained excellence. Under Shelton's leadership, the Patriots produced 21 seasons with 30 or more wins and 12 seasons with 40 or more victories, highlighted by a program record 52 wins during the 2024 campaign. Under Coach Shelton's guidance Cumberlands captured ten Mid-South Conference regular season and seven MSC tournament championships while consistently competing against some of the top programs in the NAIA.
"Coach Shelton elevated this program into one of the premier baseball programs in the NAIA and established a culture of excellence that will have a lasting impact on Cumberlands beyond athletics," said University of the Cumberlands Director of Athletics Chris Kraftick. "His commitment to his players current and former, passion for the game, and dedication to this university have shaped generations of Patriots both on and off the field. We are incredibly grateful for everything Coach Shelton has done for our baseball program and the impact he has had both at Cumberlands and the local community."
The pinnacle of Shelton's tenure came over the last decade as the Patriots established themselves among the nation's elite programs. Over the past ten years UC compiled a 449-104 record for an 81.2% winning percentage with nine NAIA National Tournament appearances, including three trips to the NAIA Avista World Series.
The Patriots captured its first-ever NAIA World Series appearance in 2023 after a 49-9 campaign that included Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament titles. UC's 8-6 win over Columbia to clinch the Williamsburg Bracket was also Coach Shelton's 1,000
th win of his illustrious coaching career. The Patriots followed that breakthrough season with a historic 52-win campaign in 2024, earning the program's first NAIA World Series victory while setting six school records, including wins, home runs, RBIs, runs scored, walks, and strikeouts.
Over the past two seasons, the Patriots have posted a 98-22 record after consistently being ranked in the top-10 of the NAIA Coaches' Poll. UC went on to capture their third and fourth consecutive Mid-South Conference regular season titles, while hosting the NAIA Opening Round for the seventh time in program history.
Throughout his career, Shelton coached 26 All-Americans, seven MSC Conference Players of the Year, seven MSC Pitchers of the Year, along with multiple gold glove recipients and professional players. Twenty-two former players were drafted or signed by professional baseball organizations during his coaching career. Two of his former players Jason Ellis and Zach Hurley have been inducted into the Patriots Athletic Hall of Fame, while Charlie Muniz was named the 2025 NAIA Player of the Year.
Beyond the wins and championships, Shelton's teams were also recognized for their academic success and character. The Patriots consistently placed student-athletes on the Mid-South Conference Academic All-Conference Team and NAIA Scholar-Athlete lists, while earned ABCA Academic Team honors.
Coach Shelton will remain at Cumberlands as he transitions into operations department specializing in athletic facilities.
