Serhii Shevchenko earned athlete of the month honors after lead the Patriots to a pair of wins and three strong finishes to open the season. Shevchenko opened the season by running away from the field to win the Berea/Centre XC Jamboree.  The freshman crossed the line in 18:03.52 for a 6k race to win the race by 33 seconds.  Shevchenko followed that up with a record-breaking performance as he clocked a 24:21.80 for an 8K at the Southern Showcase.  That time was the fastest 8k time in program history breaking a 26-year record as he was the top NAIA finisher in a field comprised of majority NCAA DI and DII competitors.  Shevchenko capped of the month with his second top-ten finish of the year at the Louisville Cross Country Classic.  The freshman went 24:50.8 to place sixth overall as that time is one of the top-20 fastest times in school history.
