Dr. B.J. Temple came to Cumberland College in the fall of 1998 as an All-American transfer student from Brevard College, North Carolina. During his fall 1998 season, he was part of the men’s cross country team that finished 3rd at the NAIA National Championships. When Temple became injured during the indoor track season, he was asked to help formally coach by Head Coach Floyd Stroud. After two years of being a student assistant, Temple accepted a full time position at Cumberland.
Temple earned his degree in Movement & Leisure Studies from Cumberland and his Master’s degree in Sport Science with an emphasis in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama. In 2013, he was graduated with his Ed.D. in Leadership with an emphasis in Higher Education Administration from UC. He is also USA Track and Field Level I and II certified in endurance and sprints.
When Temple ended his 15 year coaching career in 2015, he was the longest employed assistant coach in any sport at UC. He recruited and coached 89 NAIA All-Americans, 74 Academic All-Conference Athletes, 51 Scholar Athletes, 93 All-Conference Athletes, and 14 NAIA National Champions. There were also 44 school records set in the events that he coached.
Currently Temple is an Assistant Professor in UC’s Health, Exercise, and Sport Science Department and Assistant Athletic Director. He resides in Williamsburg, Kentucky with his wife, Jamey, and three children, Jadon, Chloe, and Declan. Jamey, a 2003 alumna, is an Associate Professor in UC’s English Department.
