Darren Poore, the son of G.J. and Doris Poore, was born in Covington, Kentucky. He attended Walton-Verona High School in Walton, Kentucky, where he played varsity baseball and basketball for three years. Darren was a member of two regional championship baseball teams and was selected to play in the East-West All Star baseball game after his senior season. He is also a member of Walton-Verona basketball's 1,000 point club, along with his brother, Brant; father, G.J.; and uncles, Lloyd and Deane.
Coach Terry Stigall recruited Darren to play baseball at Cumberland College. As a freshman, Darren started at shortstop. During four seasons as an Indian, he played in 168 consecutive games. Darren holds the 4th overall single season batting average, with .445 in 1991. He also had 204 career hits (tied 4th overall), 9 career triples (tied 3rd overall), and was named All-Conference 1st team all four years (1989-1992). Darren graduated from Cumberland with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
Upon completion of his college career, Darren signed a free agent contract with the Kentucky Rifles, an independent league baseball team that was a member of the Frontier League's inaugural season.
Darren has coached youth and middle school basketball, as well as youth football and baseball. He coached Walton-Verona High School's fall baseball team for three years and is past president of the Walton-Verona Youth Football Association. Darren presently serves on the W.A.V.E Foundation Board, which provides funding to Walton-Verona teachers for programs that may not necessarily be school funded.
Currently, Darren is a Project Manager for Baker Concrete Construction of Monroe, Ohio. He served six years on the board of the American Concrete Institute Greater Miami Valley Chapter.
Darren resides in Walton, Kentucky with his wife, Gina. They have two children, Jared (19) and Alyson (16). Jared attends the University of Kentucky on an Army ROTC scholarship. Alyson is a junior at Walton-Verona High School, where she is a proud member of the varsity basketball and softball teams.
