Kenny Smith, known to his teammates as “Big Earl” he wasn’t big in stature only 6'2 and 250 pounds, but he played big and anchored an offensive line that helped Cumberland become one of the best rushing teams in the nation.  Smith was the football program’s first two-time NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, including being a key part of Cumberland’s 1988 team, which was Cumberland’s first undefeated football team in school history.  Kenny played for Cumberland for 1985-1989 and was a vital part of the Indians ascending to national prominence. Whether he was pulling to block a linebacker or chasing down a cornerback, Kenny helped the Indian offense gain the tough yards. Not to be overlooked was his ability to protect the quarterback, rarely allowing his man to get close to applying pressure. Smith was part of Cumberland second football team that went 3-7 in 1986 before going 7-3 during in 1987 and was one of three NAIA All-American Honorable Mentions, which were the first in program history.

The 1988 season was one for the ages as Cumberland compile a perfect 10-0 record becoming the first undefeated football team in school history.  During this season, the Indians went 5-0 in conference play and outscored their opponents 355-134 over the 10 game slate.  Smith was part of the offense that averaged rushing yards 342.6 per game, and compiled 430.7 yards per game.  Smith was one of the leading blockers for Scott Hamilton, who rushed for 1462 yards and 19 touchdowns during the 1988 season.  That set the program record for yards and touchdown, which stood until the 2012 season. After graduating from Cumberland, Smith enlisted to the US Army and served in Operation Desert Storm before retiring in 2011.
