As a native of Williamsburg, "Scotty" attended Cumberland during the junior college days. Perkins enjoyed a successful high school career at Williamsburg High School and was a member of the team captured the 1946 and 1947 Southeastern Junior College Conference Championships. He later attended Georgia Southern College and having continued success on the basketball court, he was drafted by both the New York Knicks and the Syracuse Nationals in 1951. He later played on the U.S. Team in the Pan American games in Mexico. Following active duty in the Air Force he served for three years as the Freshman Coach at Georgia Southern. In 1959, he was named as Coach of South Georgia College and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. Perkins was recognized five different times as Georgia Junior College Coach of the Year, twice named GJCA Regional Coach of the Year, and he led his teams to six Georgia Junior College State Championships. In 1961, he was inducted into the Georgia Teachers College Hall of Fame and in 1993 he was inducted into the Williamsburg High School Hall of Fame. He was recognized by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club in 1997, for his record 429 wins, and he is currently seventh on the list of Georgia's winningest coaches. Scotty and his wife, Betty, are the parents of 3 children and they currently reside in Douglas, Georgia.
