A native of Williamsburg, Jim graduated from Cumberland and went on to become the nations all-time winningest Basketball coach. Jim Smiddy won more Basketball games than any other coach at any level of play. His love for basketball began when he was 9 years old-when he first played organized basketball. His coaching career lasted for 44 years. In that tiem he won 86% of his games, compiling a remarkable 1217-204 record. During his tenure as girl's Basketball coach his teams won 24 District Championships, including 13 straight, 17 Regional Championships, ;and 2 National Championships. Jim Smiddy was selected as "Coach of the Year" numerous times on the local level and in 1985 was named "National Coach of the Year." His accomplishments have led to his induction into the Bradley County (TN) Hall of Fame, Tennessee Secondary Schools Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, and National High School Sports Hall of Fame. Although Jim Smiddy passed away in July of 1995, he leaves a leagacy for the lives of all he influenced as a coach, family member, and friend.
