Cameron enrolled at Cumberland in the spring of 1961, with the hopes of becoming a member of a future golf team. With his persistence, the administration undertook the process of appointing a coach and rrecruiting potential members. Later that fall, Cameron realized his goal as he became the first recipient of a golf scholarship and was selected as team captain, a position which he held throughout his collegiate career. Cameron shouldered a great amount of responsibility for the team, often utilizing his own vehicle for transportation to various matches. Each season, Cameron played at the number one position and he held the lowest scoring average for the team for four years. In his final collegiate match, against the University of Tennessee, Cameron shot a 5 under par 67 for the first under par round by a Cumberland golfer, a record that stood until 1969. After he graduated from Cumberland, Cameron continued his golf interests by participating in amateur tournaments in the area around Knoxville, Tennessee. He also helped recruit prospective students to attend Cumberland and play golf. In 1970, the Cumberland golf team made possible by Cameron's dream and perseverance. In 2000, Cameron retired from a 35 year teaching career in the Knox County (TN) school system. He presently serves as an auditor in the Knox County (TN) Property Assessor's office. Cameron and his wife, Pat, reside in Alcoa, Tennessee. They are the parents of three sons: Scott, Perry and Jay, and they also enjoy two grandchildren.
