Dr. John Broome joined the college faculty as Professor of History in 1966. During his tenure, Dr. Broome served for over thirty years as amember of the college Athletic Committee and as the Faculty Athletic Representative. He has also been the national council of NAIA FARs and currently serves on the national council of FARs. Dr. Broome has served as the Director of Academic Advising for the past twenty years and has served on the college Acceptance and Scholarship Committee since its inception. He retired this past year after more than 33 years of service to Cumberland College. During this time, more than 6500 students have passed through Dr. Broome's classes. In addition, he has attended over 1000 athletic contests involving Cumberland teams, while often driving vans and busses to transport athletes and fans to various events. Dr. Broome states, "My wife and I decided when we came to Williamsburg that our family, our church, and our work would take more time than we had, so we have never involved ourselves in much else." He and his wife, Mavis, are active members of the Williamsburg First Baptist Church. He is the father of three daughters and grandfather of eight, yet he has exhibited as outstanding level of support for his students and the college athletic program. Despite being retired, Dr. Broome continues to serve on a "part-time" basis as a Senior Professor of Religion and History, as Director of Academic Advising and as Faculty Athletic Representative.
