Harold Hubbard was born at Brightshade, Kentucky (Clay County) where he later attended Oneida Baptist Institute and Clay County High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Berea College and the Master of Business Administration from University of Kentucky. He also earned a Certified Public Accountant designation from the State of Kentucky.

Hubbard arrived at Cumberland College, now University of the Cumberlands, in 1960 to teach business and accounting. In 1962, he left Cumberlands and was named chief accountant at National Standard Company in Dixon, Illinois, and Corbin, Kentucky, where his employment continued until 1966. He then returned to Cumberlands to teach. His commitment to students and teaching at Cumberlands has included many remarkable accomplishments too numerous to mention. A sample of his service includes: Chair of the Business Administration and Accounting Departments; sponsor of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), the business honor society, for fifteen years; sponsor of S.I.F.E., Students in Free Enterprise, for eight years; served on various athletic, curriculum, catalog and insurance committees. Hubbard has served on the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame Committee since its inception in 1996 and has voted on all inductions but his own.

Additionally, Hubbard has served on the Cumberlands Athletic Committee since 1966 and at times has served as chair and as Faculty Athletic Representative. In 2008, University of the Cumberlands bestowed Hubbard with an Honorary Alumnus Degree.

Hubbard began working closely with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1974. Since then, he has served as Eligibility Chair for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC), Mid South Conference (MSC), NAIA District 32, Region XI and Association of Independent Institutions. His local and national service tenures on these committees are the longest of any member. Hubbard has served on the NAIA National Eligibility Committee and the Constitution & By-Laws Committee since 1994.

Outside of the University he has served as Chair of Professional Home Health Advisory Board for over twenty years; Board of Directors and Chair for the Audit Committee at Williamsburg National Bank for seventeen years; Board of Directors and Audit Committee at Forcht Bank, NA in Lexington, Kentucky since its inception.

Hubbard was married to Virginia Corey Hubbard for thirty-nine years until her passing in 1999. He is the father of two sons, David Hubbard of Annapolis, Maryland, and Phil Hubbard of Williamsburg, Kentucky, and one granddaughter, Emily Hubbard of Annapolis, Maryland.
