John Renfro came to Cumberland as an All-State Basketball player from Williamsburg High School. During his freshman year he was the starting forward for the Indian Squad which won 28 games straight, while winning both the Kentucky and Southeastern Junior College Champions in 1948. He set a high scoring record in 1949 helping the Indians repeat as Kentucky and Southeastern Junior College Champions in 1949. Renfro also lettered in Baseball during his career at Cumberland. While playing for the College of William and Mary in 1950, Renfro was selected three times as player of the week and was named as an All-Southern Conference player. He continued his education and successful basketball career at Georgia Southern College from 1951 until 1953. Renfro later taught High School Health and Physical Education and served as Basketball coach at Bacon County High School in Alma, Georgia. From 1955-1958 he was Head of the Health, Physical Education, and Athletic Departments for Pikeville College, and he returned to Cumberland College in 1959. At various times during his 25 years of service to Cumberland, Renfro served as Department Head, Athletic Director, and Coached Basketball, Baseball, Golf and Tennis. From 1959 until his retirement in 1985 Renfro also served as Vice-President and later as President of Renfro Supply Company in Williamsburg. John Renfro and his wife Bernice are the parents of two children, John Jr. and Rhonda, and they continue to reside in Williamsburg.
