Hall of Fame
Coach Mathes served for thirty-two years as an Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education at Cumberland College. During this time he coached basketball, bowling, tennis, and served as the Baseball Coach for 21 years. With Mathes at the reigns, Cumberlands Baseball team won over 65% of their games compiling a 396-202 record. His teams claimed 15 Conference titles and 5 KIAC District 32 Championships. Coach Mathes was repeatedly named KIAC District 32 Coach of the Year. He served on the District 32 Executive Board as Chairman of the Baseball Committee from 1978-1980 and from 1979-1982 served on the NAIA Baseball Rating Committee. In 1982, Coach Mathes retired from Cumberland College and in 1987 was inducted into the NAIA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Walter Mathes resides in Williamsburg and continues to be an avid supporter of Indian athletics.
