Fred Sagester came to Cumberland College, now University of the Cumberlands, in 1965 after graduating from Princeton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a member of the Basketball team from 1965-1967 under the late Coach John Renfro, and Sagester also participated in Track from 1965-69 under Coach Henry Morgan and Coach Gordon Bocock.
At Cumberlands Fred made quite a name for himself becoming the most valuable track member for 1968 and 1969. He was voted NAIA Outstanding Athlete for 1969. He was the first Cumberlands track member to compete in the Decathlon held at the University of Kentucky Relays where he placed first on day one and finished fourth for the event.
At graduation in 1969, Sagester was the second leading scorer in Cumberlands Track history. He was also the holder of eight school records both individual and team events. He competed in the NAIA National Meet in Albuquerque, New Mexico, placing in a tie for sixth place in the high jump. Sagester consistently competed in most of the following events in each track meet; high jump, long jump, triple jump, 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, 120 yard high hurdles, 440 yard hurdles, 440 relay, 880 yard relay and the mile relay.
Sagester received his BS in Physical Education, Health & English while here, and he went on to obtain his Master degree in English at University of Notre Dame. He received Administration Certification from Xavier University and his Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Sagester served as the Executive Director of the Indiana Virtual Academy in Versailles, Indiana, before returning to Cumberlands in 2009.
He is currently a professor and Associate Chair of the Education Department at University of the Cumberlands. Sagester and his wife, the former Janet Prewitt, a 1971 alumna of Cumberlands, reside in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
