Soni Smith came to Cumberland College, now University of the Cumberlands, from Taylor High School in Pierson, FL. She attended Cumberland from 1980-84.

Included in her best accomplishments is being named Cumberland's first ever NAIA women's national player-of-the-week in her sophomore year. That week, Smith scored a total of 59 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and handed out 7 assists in just two games. The only other Cumberland athlete to receive this honor was men's basketball player, Larry Gorman in the 1976-77 season.
