Hall of Fame
Cumberland's Judo program began in 1963 and was recognized as a varsity sport during the 1964-1965 season. O.J. Helvey coached the Judo team from its inception until his retirement in 1986. Helvey led the Indian jodokas to their first major tournament win on to win the Mid-West Championship 14 more times. Over the following years, Helvey led the women's team to claim four National Collegiate Judo Association Championships and the men's team to three NCJA Championships. During his years at the helm, Helvey coached several outstanding players who went on to compete in the World University Games, and the Pan American Games. Four Cumberland Judo Team members won spots on the U.S. Olympic Judo teams in 1984, 1988, and 1992. Helvey has served as Vice-President and president of the National Collegiate Judo Association, as Vice-President of the National Judo Association, and as NAIA representative for the U>S. Olympic Committee. "Doc" was inducted into the Mid-West Judo Hall of Fame in 1977, selected as Coach of the World University Games to France, and was selected as the NCJA Coach of the Year on three different occasions. "Doc" Helvey and his wife, Marjorie, have three children and five grandchildren. The Helveys have continued to reside in Williamsburg following their retirement. Both are avid supporters of the Cumberland College Athletic Program.
